Friday, October 10, 2008 Fall/Winter “Spirit” Basketball League for Children with Disabilities Contributed By Brian Higgins Cincy Swish, a Cincinnati based non-profit organization has announced an expansion of their Spirit program, designed to provide Basketball instruction to children, ages 6-14, with disabilities.
The expanded Spirit program will now, in addition to instruction, provide children of all abilities the opportunity to be part of a team within their new fall league.
The Spirit program stresses basketball fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting and defense, through interaction with Cincy Swish coaches and peer models. The new Fall/Winter league will expand this opportunity and provide each Spirit athlete with the social interaction of being part of the team. As John Weilbacher, Director of Coaching for Cincy Swish states “The goal of the Spirit program is to provide every child the opportunity to enjoy basketball, experience being part of a team and most importantly, the chance to play.”
During the 2007-2008 Spirit season there were approximately 20 athletes who participated in the semi-monthly Basketball clinic or Summer Camp programs. With the addition of the new Fall/Winter league, Cincy Swish has raised its participation goals for the Spirit program to 40.
The fall/Winter league will begin in November and continue through February, 2009. The first several weeks will consist of Basketball instruction, after which teams will be formed and a formal schedule of weekly games will commence. All practices and games will be held at the Mariemont High School Auxiliary Gym.
Efforts are currently underway to build awareness of the expanded Cincy Swish Spirit program and it is expected the goal of doubling participation to 40 athletes for the 2008-2009 season will be quickly reached. The Cincy Swish is a non-profit basketball organization based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our mission is to provide exceptional basketball opportunities for athletes of all abilities. We aim to help each athlete to grow as an individual through the game of basketball, sportsmanship, and community outreach.
We believe that competitive basketball should be affordable. We are committed to “all-inclusive” registration fees which cover all league and tournament fees, referee fees, gym rental and equipment costs, AAU registration and insurance, and uniforms. We also recognize that many athletes prefer to play multiple sports and therefore remain flexible with limited travel outside the Cincinnati area.
We play in several tournaments throughout the fall, winter, and spring seasons. We also offer camps, clinics, and workouts throughout the year for boys and girls of all ages. We have recently started our Swish Spirit program which, through interaction with our coaches and players, teaches basketball fundamentals to athletes with disabilities. For more information please click the "Swish Spirit" tab at the top of the page.
Our coaching staff consists of experienced coaches from all levels of youth basketball including AAU and select divisions. We supplement our training program with guest speakers from Division 1A programs and players from the Cincinnati region.
